What mold needs, and how it gets into your home

Mold on the back of drywall

Mold comes in various forms. Some forms are found in our everyday lives and are not harmful to the average person. While other forms are considered toxic and can cause various different health problems, especially in young children and the elderly. Determining the type of mold that you see in your home or business can only be done by a trained industrial hygienist, like Weecycle Environmental. Please see our "Why Test for Mold?" page for more information about testing.

Flooding & Mold

With that said, most molds found growing on the inside of the home (or a business) are cause by some type of water damage. Since mold can form in as little as 72 hours, this water damage could be from a long term problem or something that happened as little as three days ago. Hot water actually increases the rate of growth for mold (i.e. from a hot water heater). With hot water, mold can form in as little as 24 hours. The most important thing you can do with mold is stop the water source. If the source is not obvious, All Pro Restoration has leak detection services available every day of the week.

What Mold Needs To Grow

Mold needs four different things in order for it to grow (or continue to grow if it has already surfaced) - a water source, a food source, cool temperatures and no direct sunlight. If you take away one of these things, the mold cannot continue to grow. However, it can remain dormant until the missing source is added again; at which point it will begin flowering and growing once more.

If you see mold, refrain from touching it; that is always our first instinct. Touching it will actually disturb the spores and make them airborne; at this point they can easily be inhaled and disbursed throughout any open area.

Mold FAQs

How long does mold remediation take?

It depends on the type and extent of damage, and whether demolition is required. We respond quickly and complete work as quickly as we can. However, insurance pushback, stubborn building materials, and extensive restoration needs can make the process take longer. Once we assess the damage, we can give you a more detailed timeline approximation.

Can I DIY mold remediation?

We strongly discourage it. Disturbing mold without proper containment and equipment releases spores into the air, spreads contamination to previously unaffected areas, and exposes you to health risks. Mold spores also aren't always visible, so you could put time and effort into remediation and still not solve the problem. We conduct thorough post-remediation testing to ensure complete removal.

Does insurance cover mold remediation?

It depends on your policy. Insurance often covers mold if it's from a sudden event (like a burst pipe or sewage leak), but most policies don't cover long-term mold damage. That's why it's so important to call right away after water damage. We'll help you understand whether coverage is likely, and we offer flexible financing if your claim is denied.

How do I know if I have mold in my home?

Anytime there's water damage, there's a potential for mold growth, so we recommend calling a professional immediately after experiencing water damage. Signs of hidden mold damage include: persistent musty odor, unexplained allergy or respiratory symptoms, visible water stains, and a history of water damage that wasn't professionally dried. Our technicians use thermal imaging and moisture meters to detect mold that isn't visible to the naked eye.

Do you handle mold remediation if mold is found?

Yes. If mold is discovered during the restoration process, professional mold remediation is provided to ensure a safe and healthy environment.

How do you prevent mold after water damage?

Mitigate water damage as soon as possible. Mold can start in as little as 72 hours on standard water loss or 24 hours with hot water source. Water cannot be sopped up with towels - it wicks into walls and insulation. Advanced moisture meters and thermal imaging locate hidden areas. Proper combination of dehumidification, air movement, and heat is needed to dry materials to prevent mold growth.
